1. Expensive
2. Cheap
3. Indeed
4. ?
5. Brutally hot in summer. Great the rest of the year. Occasional cold snap that wouldn't bother of Detroiter.
6. Depends on who you ask.

You would have to be more specific on what you like as far as neighborhoods. Austin is a pretty safe city all around, so almost any area would be good in that regard. The only questionable areas are in parts of East Austin (but not ALL of East Austin). A lot also depends on where you will work. I'm a married woman, so can't give any advice about single Austin women. If you're a nice guy and treat women well, then you should have no problem People in Texas are friendly and it's pretty laid back here. Don't be surprised when strangers strike up a conversation, even standing in a grocery store line. As far as the weather, it's hot. July and August are two of the hottest months in Texas. The humidity levels are lower in Central Texas then they are, in say, Houston. Racism isn't that bad. Most people are pretty live and let live. This is a majority minority state after all

Thanks much. I'm open for more opinions. Anything to help me prepare for my move. How are jobs? Public transit? Anything that I should be aware of in addition to my first set of questions.

Do you have a specific reason why you want to move to Austin- family here, have a good lead on job opportunities, etc?

I don't know anything about Detroit but public service jobs in Austin such as EMS/EMT aren't plentiful and very competitive to get. A friend's brother is a part time volunteer firefighter who waits tables as he tries to get a full time job.

Public transit is pretty much non existent outside of downtown/central Austin. The buses in that area are pretty dependable and will get you from point A to point B. But rent is more expensive this area as well. Austin and Texas in general are a very car dependent state.

The average 1 bedroom in the Austin area is $850 a month plus another $200-300 for electric/cable/internet which I imagine is probably a lot more than Detroit.

If you're looking for a change of scenery just because, you should probably look more into Houston and the Dallas-Ft. Worth area which would have more EMS job opportunities and cheaper rent. You can always visit Austin on the weekends.

Just to get out of Michigan again. I spent a number of years in the northwest but didn't like it all that much. Just wanna give the south a try and hear that Austin's the place place to be.
