Uh, not so lucky here. I took a $20K pay cut to teach in Round Rock from NE Ohio. But I will say, with the no state income tax, my take home is only a couple hundred less than what I was taking home in Ohio. Benefits also aren't that great here. There are no teacher's unions within the districts to bargain things. But for me, it's totally worth it to be living here.

No and no. I'm not a teacher but from what friends have said the annual increase is under 2% a year...so starting at $40K it'd take you 30 years to get to $70K. this is why a lot of teachers in Austin work 2nd jobs especially during the summer. the raises do not keep up with inflation. For some reason, I think a master's degree is worth $2K-5K more depending on the district. Not sure on that. All those numbers are just what I've overheard from teachers I'm friends with...granted, I don't pay that much attention so hopefully I'm way off.

The flip side of no union is that there are more merit raises. My sister teaches in a small suburb of SA and is making very good money for working 1/2 time...she teaches every other day only. She used to teach full time, but with 4 kids, it gets a little chaotic . Anyway, she has about 18 years experience now and here equivalent full-time pay would be ~70k, I think, if not more now. She started for right at 15k in the late 80s in Elgin . Anyway, she is an excellent teacher and quickly exceeded the average increases, even though she has taught in 3 totally different districts now. She wouldn't trade it for any other job...she loves the time off in the summer and around Christmas. Even though she 'team' teaches, she still gets a full year toward retirement, too. She also likes the smaller districts for a variety of reasons - you may want to look at them as well.

My wife stated in December of 99 making just under 30 she is not a little over 41. The thing about teaching is I think most people do not do it for the money.

In Round Rock a master's degree equals $1,000 over someone with just a bachelor's.
