Are you looking for ball ammo or something more specialized, like a fancy hollow point?
Regular ball ammo goes fast, but the specialized protection ammo, like hollow point rounds are generally available.

I haven't seen any 9mm at Academy or Walmart except during the "special" times they re-stock. Nationally HP is going for 75 cents to $1.25 per round. Ridiculous.

Local gun shops are more likely to have (J)HP, self defense, +P, etc rounds in stock. ALL 9mm gets bought out immediately at Academy and Walmart, though the more expensive stuff tends to linger a bit longer, but eventually it gets sold. Once at the Academy in RR/I35 they had the Hornady 9mm Zombie rounds in stock at around 9am (only 9mm they had that day left at that time). At around 11am it too was gone.

Yeah, all the range ammo is as scarce as a hotdog vendor at a PETA convention.

I've seen quite a bit of the $1.25/round self defense stuff at Academy up in Round Rock & Cedar Park....most of the time.

Not too hard to get it at Cabelas (and if you pick up on the pattern you can get it almost every time but I'm not going to give that away to the world). They restock several times per day but they go fairly quick and you are limited to 5 boxes of ammo of any caliber. Also have .223 rounds, although they are mainly steel casing or smaller grain varmint brass rounds. I reload, so this isn't a big need for me, but I still pick up some rounds when I remember since reloading supplies are also pretty tight as well.
