I just learned of this April 30 deadline to apply the year you turn 65 in order to get the additional property tax exemption this year so thought I'd raise a red flag about it. See page 13

Did that years ago, but IIRC, it only covers school taxes.

April 30 is the deadline for Homestead Exemption. All other exemptions can be placed on the property the day they happen. The day you turn 65, you can get the exemption. The day you receive your notice for percentage of disability, you can receive that exemption. There are no deadlines except for Homestead.

Did that one too, when we built our house in '95.

I am wondering, we already have HS and Disability exemptions. When we hit 65, will it make much of a difference?

That is not what the highlighted purple boxes say in this form http://www.traviscad.org/pdf/PropTaxBasics.pdf on page 14 under "2.4.3 Qualifying for disabled veteran or survivor exemption". It reads:

Quote:
How to File for an Exemption on Your Home

1. Obtain an application form(s) at your local appraisal district office.

2. Return the form(s) to the appraisal district office after Jan. 1
but no later than April 30. Be sure to include a copy of your
driver’s license or state-issued personal identification card
and a copy of your vehicle registration. If you do not own a
vehicle, submit a copy of a utility bill in your name and sign
an affidavit swearing you do not own a vehicle.

3. Provide all the information and documentation requested.
For example, if you are claiming an age 65-or-older or
disabled exemption, you may need to show proof of age or
disability. Remember that making false statements on your
exemption application is a criminal offense.

4. You may late file for a homestead exemption and a disabled
veteran’s exemption up to one year after the date upon which
taxes would become delinquent. You will receive a new tax
bill with a lower amount. If you have already paid your taxes,
you will receive a refund.

etc. etc.

They way I understand what I read there is that you must file by April 30 if you want the exemption for this year, otherwise you will have to pay the full amount. You may late file and get a refund later but you could be obligated to pay the full amount this year if you did not file by the deadline.

If that is not what they meant then that document is very poorly written.
