We are considering building a pool and are looking at several options for the pool deck (ranging from stamped concrete, to flagstone, to pavers). The pool companies pricing is higher than if we were to contract it ourselves, but they mention that when they do it, they tie the deck in properly so that we wont have issues w/ the deck moving and potentially causing problems (such as breaking the coping). I think it's a valid point - my parents in law recently re-did their deck and used a contractor who didn't do a good job - and their coping cracked. One option that seems like a good compromise is using pavers. To me, it seems like the pavers would not cause any issues because it's not 'bonded' to the pool/coping structure. Has anybody used pavers on their pool? Did the pool builder manage the work or did you bring in your own contractor? Or possibly do it yourself?

We used both - concrete around the higher traffic shallow end, and pavers around the lower traffic deep end. The fact there is a tree at that end that the pavers surround was another factor. That we were near the cover limits was another. Happy with the pavers, and the tree is thriving.

Builder did it all - coping (stone), kool deck and pavers.
