Hello. We are going to be moving to Austin in the next few months. We have kiddos (high school and middle school aged) and are looking for safe neighborhoods to look at. We'd like to rent a home (1500/mo-ish and not ready to buy) and near a Metrorail station for easy access. I would love suggestions on areas with good schools and hopefully an area where we can walk to restaurants and different things. I don't want to be scared to walk out of my front door, ya know? Please let me know if you can help. Thanks!

Looks like you have two options... and by that, I mean there are two houses in your price range for rent that come close to meeting what you're looking for, and they're both in Avery Ranch - so "walking to restaurants" consists of a 1/4 (or so) mile walk to the intersection of Avery Ranch Blvd and Parmer, where you have a Pizza joint, Chinese/Sushi place, Waterloo Ice House (for now), ZTejas, Tony C's, and whatever they end up putting in the new center on the SE corner.

Ez...what do you know about Waterloo? Wouldn't hurt me none if a BBQ or chicken joint opened there.

Whispers that they're not making it in that location. Not too surprising, since it's been dang near empty every time I've been there.

A -good- BBQ spot there could be dangerous to the waistline. Might have to take the long way on the bike there and back!

Last I heard from undisclosed sources who know is that it won't be Waterloo for long and will very soon become more of a Cajun restaurant...Blue Bayou Bistro or something of the sort. Some of their more popular sellers will still be on the menu but they'll also have gumbo (which was DELICIOUS when I tasted it!), and more Cajun offerings. I HOPE it still is in the works, since Mike the manager is no longer there. He was the impetus behind a lot of the changes, and was really pushing Barry to get live music, make menu changes, etc. We'll see...

Cajun works! At least it's not another Tex-Mex joint. Although a good sports bar would be nice.

Ez, I'm thinking Dwayne said they were going to do more TVs or projections or something. He said they were closed yesterday but people were in there working, so I'm hoping the change is imminent! I know their franchise renewal was up this month, so maybe it is!

Giant sports bar going kitty-catty-cornered at the new development behind CVS. I reckon you knew that already. I should be interested in what goes in...we're considering one of those townhomes for our downsizing move.

Continued derailment of thread:
To give you an idea of my experience at Waterloo Avery, DW and I ordered burgers and mine came on a nice bun with appropriate grill marks on the bread. Bad news was...the bun was COLD! Did they really serve a refrigerated bun from last night? or do they buy 'pre-charred' buns and not bother to toss them on the grill/flat top at all? I'd vote for a clean sweep of the place...DW doesn't like Cajun and she's from MISSISSIPPI !!!

We're going to have to ask a mod to move these posts to a new thread! Poor OP has one answer and a bunch of talk.

The League looks promising, I just hope it meets the market need.

To be fair , OP didn't play the 'We are coming to Austin' quiz and twenty-questions game. Only appropriate that we focus on what's really important....FOOD!
