Howdy y'all,

I was wondering if any of you all knew whether or not you can return your Mexican vehicle permit at the Mexican Consulate in Austin, instead of having to drive all the way to the border to do it.

I live in San Antonio and my wife's sister and brother-in-law are coming down for the weekend from Oklahoma to visit, and he told me he needs to run to the border in the morning to return his vehicle permit (if you don't cancel it within 6-months they charge around $400). I know that the Mexican consulate issues permits there in Austin because there is a Banjercito there (the Mexican bank that issues the permits), they don't in San Antonio. I'm having trouble contacting anyone about this or finding any definitive info online about it. Would be nice to just be able to drive up to Austin (where I used to live when I went to UT!) instead of going down to Laredo.

Thanks!

Almost a decade ago, I got a permit to go into Mexico with my car, and I didn't return the permit.

I was not charged any money, although my understanding was that I wouldn't be able to take that car into Mexico again. Which I didn't. Have the rules changed?

They put a hold on your credit card now for anywhere between $200 and $400, depending on the year of the vehicle. From what I've heard, they will not let you take the car back into Mexico if the permit expired.
