I was looking at Bureau of Economic Analysis stats today and found these GDP numbers for 2011 for the respective MSAs:

Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos - $84,842,000,000
San Antonio-New Braunfels - $75,397,000,000

And GDP per capita:
Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos - $47,570
San Antonio-New Braunfels - $34,351

Yeah, Austin has had a bigger economy than SA's for some years now.

With 4.2 million it would rank 15th just behind Detroit.

I wonder how many of the 6.88% will stay 5 years or longer?

San Jose is growing half as fast as austin annually and though San Jose is 120,000 people larger than us we may beat them in the coming years.
I saw on the census site a list of the fastest growing cities over 50,000. Three of the top four were Austin suburbs: San Marcos, Cedar Park, and Georgetown.

I agree with you on San Jose. San Jose has a good lead right now and is growing nicely but with the explosive growth of Austin, it is only a matter of time.
