Hello

We are relocating to the UK for a cpl years and thinking about storing a bunch of stuff (tools, saws, fans, lamps, electrical appliances) in our attic space (instead of renting out self-storage). We will be leasing out the house. Our attic is not temperature controlled though so I have some concerns about what type of items are not suitable to store there.

I am thinking electronics is not a good idea. Any other things I should watch out for ? Fire hazards ?

Thanks
Photobuddy

Don't store anything that will attract the critters (rats, mice, squirrels,..)

Don't store any photos, flammable stuff, old-style media (tapes, vinyl, film, etc), or any delicate / fine wood items (musical instruments, fine furniture, etc -- heat and humidity will damage).

I actually think most electronics are OK, as long as they are protected from dust. I keep electronics in my attic. Along with books, papers (nothing historical or heirloom, of course), decorations, toys/sports equip, etc.

Seems like most furniture will be OK, or could some of it be a fire hazard?

I would not store wood furniture in an attic. Extreme heat is not good for finished wood - will dry out and crack it. And the stuffing in cushions may attract rodents. My attic only has empty boxes and suitcases. I would think most tools and fans would be OK. Lamps might be OK if they are ceramic or metal, but most lampshades now are lined with plastic, and that is likely to become deformed. I would think electrical appliances, would be OK, but it might be good to inquire of manufacturers what the maximum storage temperature is for their products.

All of this begs the question.

How hot does it get in an Austin attic?

200 degrees?
