you get that you don't want HOA rules running your life, but you're fine with governmental rules running your neighbor's life.
And just in case further clarification is needed on this: I am fine with City of Austin laws that are passed by our democratically elected city government. For the most part I think they're there for safety reasons. You caught me - I'm pro-government. I'm not sure diving into why I appreciate the system of government we have in the US is appropriate for an Austin discussion so i won't go into it.

On the other hand, I have no interest in additional regulations imposed by HOAs that to me seem to be about aesthetics, making sure everything looks exactly the same and controlling people who live there. I don't really see the conflict. I live in Austin, follow Austin laws. I don't live in an HOA neighborhood because I don't want to follow those rules.

The reason I started this thread is that I was curious about the law, brought on by my neighbor. Apparently that didn't come through, but whatever.

Because the City of Austin would never, ever never never engage in controlling people ...

You don't have to agree with me - that's just how I see things.

Geez, I guess this is rubbing people the wrong way! Different strokes, as they say.

Ugh! That was one of your worst ones! "rubbing people"!!

Of course that's my opinion but feel free to discredit it and make yours valid!

*smiley faces means I'm joking around just in case you didn't know.

Unless you are thinking that her business is some kind of front for prostitution....maybe mind your own business.
Let the neighbor make an income.

Is there a directory for the city of Austin that lists the addresses of all of the busybodies in town? For many people searching for a new home, this would be an invaluable resource.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I wouldn't want an illegal massage business in my neighborhood. Many are fronts for prostitution and I'd rather live next to an accountant that is operating illegally than a brothel. If you suspect that to be the case, you could call the vice department and they could check into it.

Check with the state to see if they are licensed at that address and if so, the local municipality to see if they have a business license.

I'm a little confused - of all the ridiculous questions that get asked, people are taking offense to this one?

If my neighbor was running a massage business out of their home, I'd want to make sure things were legit. You don't have to be that cynical to know that some massage businesses are an entirely other kind of business.

In addition, a lot of municipalities do have rules and regulations about home based businesses if they bring traffic to a residential area. I believe there was a story in the statesman recently about a home in brentwood or rosedale where some entrepreneurs got in trouble for this.
