Hi. My parents live in Pensacola. Austin is pretty expensive compared to the rest of Texas but reasonable to some people who come from other areas. I know that Pensacola prices have risen as well. There is so much more to do here than Pensacola. What is your price range for housing? You won't have the beach but then again you won't have the hurricanes either. My parents have considered moving here as well once my Dad retires

Make sure you look at the economy, salary comparisons, and utility prices. These were things that surprised me when I moved here form Memphis.
I really don't like Pensacola. I never thought I'd want to return to Memphis so badly.
I don't know what the traffic is like in Austin, but be prepared for the worst.
The retirees here will hold you up on the two lane highways for days. And there are lots of two lane highways because Pensacola's development isn't on par for it's population.

Oh, and it's not really down to earth.
Just read some of the other posts regarding the area. I won't go into detail.
