I love Northwest Hills, but want to give Jester Mountain a shout out. It's a great neighborhood off of 2222 and 360 way up high, and a really pretty place.

If avoiding stuck up is what you're into, but want decent schools with nice people and a nice area with lots of trees, give Western Oaks or Legend Oaks a try. Significantly less costly than Northwest Hills... and Circle C is just down the road.

Also, I'm very interested in what you have to say about Tarrytown and west Austin being stuck up. I can imagine it I guess.

Really, you should have been more specific in your original post. You asked for the best neighborhoods, so of course you'll get answers like Westlake and Tarrytown. You should have asked "what is a great neighborhood that's laid back and not stuck-up"...

However, I disagree that Tarrytown is stuck up. I've got friends that live there, and I would say that it feels very pretty laid back for how expensive everything is. Westlake, on the other hand, does have it's share of snobby people. But that's not necessarily limited to west Austin -- you might very well find the same in Circle C, Steiner, or even Round Rock. I mean, look at the Forest Creek debacle...

Good to know -- that was my initial impression when I came down this summer to househunt. I liked Shady Hollow immediately. It's to have my take on the neighborhood confirmed.

Now, can't wait to get moved there!

Maybe some where with decent schools in the area (private or public).
I have never found Tarrytown to be stuck up.
