I realize that Souplantation is nothing special, really, but my kids loooove it. If you don't know what it is, It's a healthy buffet. So there's a long salad bar with salads, raisins, veggies, nuts, croutons, etc. Then the main buffet has pizza, warm sourdough bread, muffins, baked potatoes, about 6 different soups and 3 different pastas. Dessert is soft serve ice cream with toppings or fruit. It's sort of a carb-fest, but for my picky kids it's heaven, and the only place that we go out to eat!
By the way, as an update to my earlier posts looking for areas with geeky families, we are in escrow for a house in Cedar Park with a huge yard that backs on a greenbelt. My husband is still staying in a hotel and working, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel as the house should close in mid-July.

Sadly, you won't find it in Austin. The places that came close, Fresh Choice and Souper Salad, didn't survive and been closed. Souplantation is called Sweet Tomatoes in Texas. There are locations in Houston and Dallas but not here. Sorry. Whenever we go to San Diego, we head first to Souplantation it really is good.

There are still SouperSalads here:

But Fresh Choice was nicer, too bad it closed. Don't know of any other similar places here. In fact buffet-style restaurants aren't too common in Austin, it seems. Lots of little mom & pop healthy places, trailers, trendy restaurants, etc. But buffets, other than the big Chinese Food ones, are not common.

I really need to get my kids to like more kinds of foods....that's the solution. It seems like there are many more interesting options in Austin (which I'll enjoy), but my kids like boring. We can try Souper Salad, though. Thanks!

OK, some here will cringe at this suggestion but if the kids crave variety, there is always Golden Corral. It's not fine dining or health food but might suit their tastes. Price is on par with Souplantation for all you can eat buffet. Similar to, but better than, Old Country Buffet.

Golden Corral occurred to me, as well, as it was a place that I sometimes took my daughter, and that she loved. We even managed to eat healthy there sometimes!
