I agree with you on Pok-e-joes. It's good BBQ and I like the sides and sweet tea. I miss the old location that was at 5th/West Lynn (D__n downtown condos).

You asked why I like Donn's? Both Donn's are smaller BBQ joints so its fun sitting at a table at lunch time and having a conversation with someone you've never met. Donn's uses mesquite and a touch of applewood to smoke the meats. The guys running the pits have worked for Donn's for years so they are pretty particular about the quality of the cuts that are given to the customers.

Some of the BBQ joints I've been to will try to give you grizzle and the poorer cuts. Donn's trashes all of that. Donn's purchases their sausage from Hudson's on South Congress. Some people like Elgin sausage - it's pretty good but Hudson's is better.

Again it's all personal opinions.

A lot of it depends on exactly what you get. For example I dont like anything except creamed corn and extra moist brisket at rudys. Their ribs, prime rib, turkey etc I just dont like

I have found salt lick brisket to be very dry and I really dont like their sides. I love their sauce though and eat the backed potato with brisket everytime I go through the airport.

County line is marginal - the meat is dry and the sauce is only so so. I pretty much only eat brisket tacos there. The chopped beef sandwich is ok as well.

Thanks, I'll check Donn's out. It's one of the few places down near the Y that I've never tried. I've always wondered about it. Just got back from Salt Lick and it was delicious.

I just went to Iron Works for the first time a few weeks ago and I enjoyed it. The place was packed. I am also a fan of Rudy's. There sauce is wonderful. I do not like Salt Lick because of the BBQ sauce. It is mustard based and I can't stand mustard.

I like Rudys sauce. Its got a bite and I like the garlic. I'll go to Rudy's for the chicken or brisquet - sausage, well I am not a fan. I think it may be Eckerts or some other stuff.

Salt Lick sauce: AchtungPV said it had thousand island in it - you say mustard. I can taste the conflicts in flavor.

We are pretty luck in South Central Texas for our BBQ. I think I will make Sunday a road trip day and make a trip to lovely, little, laid back Lockhart for some BBQ.

Ya'all have a good weekend.

car957- You are correct, we are very lucky to have the BBQ that we do. My folks came down from Chicago (they lived in Texas before) and they wanted BBQ morning, day, and night. I was going to have some Tex-Mex this weekend but forget it- I am having some BBQ!! Be safe and have fun everyone.

That's why I said Salt Lick was good, "different" BBQ... the sauce is different, but it's interesting for a change. I haven't noticed their brisket being dry - but I have only been there twice.

Seriously people - try Round Rock BBQ.

I also want to go out to Lockhart for the BBQ - how far away is that?

If I were you, I would take a drive to The County Line. It is by the 360 bridge. It is so delicious and you get to eat on the water. It is so beautiful. The food is delicious and they make fresh hot wheat bread with every meal.

A Californian taste for BBQ is much different than a native Texan.

Oh please. Who are you referring to?

I have been to County Line - I do love their bread. The BBQ in my opinion was so-so. I had turkey, and it was dry.
