Hi we are thinking about moving to Austin within the next month and wanted to know about South Austin? Is it a decent/safe area? I am a single parent of a teen and want to make sure its a safe area. I prefer to be in the Round Rock area but the apts are out of my price range. I appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Most of South Austin is decent and safe. Some of the best neighborhoods and schools are in the Southwest. Stay away from East Riverside Drive area and Dove Springs, both East of IH-35.

Hmm, I would think that it would be cheaper in Round Rock then in South Austin, but heck what do I know We live in Oak Hill and its seems like a very safe area so far.

I don't know about the schools, but I live in Georgetown (near Round Rock) and I would prefer RR over So. Austin. Parts of So. Austin can be rough. If you choose So. Austin, please get some professional help with an apt locator (free to you) or drive around and talk to different people. You will find that we are very friendly and most people would be happy to give their opinions. Once you sign a lease, you can't get out of it. I was a single parent to and it's very scary moving to a new big city.

How have you been doing your research to date? Have you looked on Craigslist?

Lastly, if you know where you will be working, that is a plus. Get as close to that as you possibly can because Austin and surrounding area traffic is horrible. You don't want to spend 2 plus hours of you day in your car. Plus gas at $3.50 and up doesn't help either. I rented most of my life and commuted and it was horrible.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I really prefer to stay in the Round Rock/Pflugerville area if possible. I've been looking online at Rent.com and I am working with a guy from Auatin Realty. I have never been to Austin before but Im coming down this weekend to look at apts. I want to be close to my job which is really close St. David North Austin Medical Center. I haven't been on Craiglist but I will check it out.

If you'll be working at or near St David's North, living in South Austin would be incredibly inconvenient, and honestly irresponsible.

Also, S Austin is generally more expensive than the RR/Pf area.

Craigslist isn't really valuable in getting accurate rental information anymore. What is your budget?

I would look just up Parmer at a place like I linked below. It looks like 2 bedroom apartments there start at $1000 per month. Honestly, any place that is under that price range in the Austin area for a 2 bedroom apartment is probably going to have higher property crime along with other issues. Is your teen in High School? I think that these apartments linked below feed into McNeil High School in Round Rock ISD which would be really good as well (but verify that). There are apartments just East of St. David's North that you definitely want to stay away from. Good luck.

I think you'd need to define what you mean by "south Austin". I would extremely surprised if rents in south Austin really were cheaper than Round Rock, unless you're talking so far south that you aren't really in Austin anymore (Kyle/Buda).

Yeah I wasn't sure how far S. Austin is from my job. I will be working near St. David Medical Center. Off of Burnett Rd. Im looking for a 2 bedroom for no more than $850. Yes my daugther is in High School. I will check them out. Thanks so much. Once I get to Austin this weekend I will familiarize myself with the area.
