That same storm brought record snowfall to DFW (airport) as well.
Feb 2011 had a nice snowy morning, too. Not a lot, certainly, but nice for here Kids were out trying to scrape together enough snow to make snowmen, sledding down retention pond slopes, it was great

Yes, we got enough that day in NW Round Rock (almost Georgetown) for the kids to build a 4 foot snowman that lasted until the next afternoon.

You'll be disappointed in the winters. I love winter too (grew up in Alaska) and snow is a rather rare event. Not so much because it is Texas or because it is south, but because of our proximity to the coast. Ask any Texas Tech kid and they'll tell you Lubbock gets quite a bit of snow (relatively speaking that is) and for the last few years Dallas has gotten enough snow to make things look pretty for awhile and stick around overnight and through the morning. All of those times, Austin has gotten nothing. In 2011 we got enough of a dusting that it stayed through the morning and was good enough to get work cancelled. Once ever one to two years you'll see enough snow on one day to make a footprint, and that's always an exciting day for me.

That said, beware the dangers of driving here when we get ice. People make fun of Austinites for not knowing how to drive in a tiny bit of winter weather, but it's actually a lot more dangerous here than up north at times, because you'll be driving along on perfectly dry, warm roads and hit a black ice patch. With no snow on it, it is incredibly slick. That's why we shut down the city if we have overnight ice.

Plus they don't salt the roads (just throw sand on it, which leads to it sandblasting my car when I'm driving for a week afterwards).

We have bad ice storms every few years (though less frequently now. January 2007 is the last one I can remember) but the last time we've had real, legit snow would have to be back in 96. I remember school being cancelled and playing out in it all day.
