My husband and I would like to live on or near a lake that we can swim and boat on. What are some of the differences between Lake Travis and Lake Austin? Which is cleaner, prettier, nicer?

Pro's and Con's to either PLEASE!!!

Lake Austin is long and narrow (really a River), gets very choppy when busy. Lake Austin is a constant level lake.

Lake Travis is about 60 miles long, has some nice coves and places to explore. Travis dumps into Austin, so it's the same water with regard to how clean it is. Lake Travis is a basin, so the water level fluxuates a great deal and you have to really pay attention to water levels and know where the low spots are.

lake austin is ice cold and i mean ice. it's great in july and august, the rest of the year a wetsuit feels mighty fine. travis is cold in the spring, warms with the air temp. so by july and august it is in the 80's

I like LT, it's relaxing and peaceful...LA is closer to town and has more action.

I prefer Lake Travis to Lake Austin due to the sheer size and warmer water. We were at the lake yesterday and it was just perfect weather, and hardly a motorboat on it. Lots of sailboats though.

It may be the same water, but Lake Austin is more grimy and oil filled... it's kind of gross. I have recently kayaked on LA and I was surprised how not clean it looked. Probably because it runs along the city.

I have been out on Lake Travis several times, and have swam there. I didn't feel like it was dirty at all.

For those who are active on the water on a regular basis - and can afford it, I would say Travis over Austin in a second.
