Wow. I thought that Bill Milburn and Nash Phillips and Clyde Copus built custom homes.

(given your criteria....Lots of stuff available at 350K....not as much at 250K)

Factor in 2.3 - 2.6% (per year) for Property Taxes. (350K would be 8-9K per year).

Renting for 6-12 months is a good idea for 2-3 different reasons.
Those taxes will be figured into your monthly mortgage and put in escrow at the mortgage holder, to be paid to the county at an appointed time.

And yes, renting is a good idea.

Some folks don't escrow. In fact...lots of folks don't.

Not sure what escrow has to do with the property tax rate difference between Jersey & Austin?

Houston, Dallas, or Phoenix would be much better alternatives to North Jersey than Austin. Obviously, South Florida would be the best possible alternative for a family from Jersey. JMHO.

If we look to buy it would be in the 300-375 range (hopefully closer to $330). Don't want too much traffic, but to give you an idea I drive 25 mins. to the train, take the train (20 mins) to NY, then walk 5 mins to the subway (150 degrees underground), a 5 min ride to 6th Ave, walk 1/2 block and I am there. Approx 1hr 15-30 min each way. Also cost montly $130 to park (pretty cheap) $139 for train, $100 for subway, and lets not forget gas to get to the train, so traffic may not be too bad! I have been looking at Round Rock mostly, but not sure if that is where we should be looking. I come out in 2 weeks, so I will get a good look at the area. Keep the info coming!

Job is in Austin, so the other areas are out. Don't think I could move to Fla. Nice place to visit but.....

For large homes from $400-550k, Central Austin neighborhoods such as Allandale and Rosedale would be excellent as well.

thanks
