Mid 60K for a late 20s single guy should be fine, provided you live in an inexpensive apartment away from downtown or affluent areas on the western side of town. (And it doesn't have to be a crappy rundown place either.) Provided you live a reasonably frugal lifestyle, that salary is more than enough to pay the bills, live fairly comfortably, put a little $$$ away for savings/retirement, and participate in some entertainment (nightlife, dating women, etc.).

I really see no point for the OP to not live anywhere but the downtown area. Once you get out of the downtown area of Austin it looks a lot like SA, but more expensive. I paid $1000 for a 1 bedroom apartment off SW Parkway 6 years ago, and I'm sure rents have increased since then.

Yeah downtown is what I'm interested in mostly.

I work in the tech field. I'd be living by myself.

Say you get $3,800 a month after taxes.

$3800 - $1800 for a place downtown = $2000
$2000 - $800 (random number I made up: cell phone $100, car $400, student loans $100, random $200) monthly bills = $1200
$1200/4 weeks = $300/week of disposable income...

are you comfortable with $300 a week?

Do your calculations and look for a place that meets your budget. You can live comfortable just how you define comfortable is up to you.

300/week is good, but 1800 for a place?!

Search rental websites and look at prices for a condo in downtown Austin and you will find the average prices. Depends on how close center you want to be.
