Questions about hunting and firearm rules in Austin, if the the rules vary from region to region, city to city.

If I do not have a license in the state, can I still go to a gun range, rent a gun and shoot away? If I do not have a hunting license, can I patronize a game ranch in near Austin, and hunt there? What is in season in late August if there is anything?

Do you know a gun range you can recommend, or a game ranch?

Home a good local range that can provide you with a basic orientation and education regarding TX gun laws and your obligations. There are a few more around if you search for shooting range austin, tx.

You do not need to register your weapons in Texas nor do you need a license to own a gun in Texas. You can keep a weapon in your home and vehicle for self defense and you can transport it to a range. Check with the range regarding any rules they have regarding bringing a weapon into the range, many require that it is unloaded and in a case or box when you bring it in.

You DO need a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

There is basically nothing in season in Travis or the nearby counties before 1 Sept, when dove season starts. There are multiple exotic game ranches starting an hour west of Austin where you can hunt year round. In addition to exotics, most have Texas whitetail deer. There is no "season" on the ranches. They ARE pricey - typically $100-200/day, plus trophy charges starting around $3K for whatever you kill.

Never been my deal so I can't recommend one. Have heard good things about YO Ranch near Kerrville, but it isn't close - couple of hours.

Good luck!

Feral hog hunting is year round and a public service. Requires a license though.

Depending on what you might want from a game ranch you might need a lisense. Check with the ranch. Arrowhead is good game ranch, deep south texas, Y.O. is a great game ranch and it will give you great amenities. Diamond K in sisterdale used to be but valero energy just bought that and Ithink its a private retreat now. Lots of game ranches in the Tx Hill Country area.

Only if you are the landowner or lessee. Or Jerry Campbell or Ronnie Creek.

Then as a non-resident, can I go to a gun range, rent their guns, and shoot? If so what is the best range to go to near Austin?

Concur. They have two locations - N & S. Have only been to the south one, but it is well run.

Another for Red's, provided an indoor range is suitable for the OP. Any time after about 11am, I'm looking to be indoors for sure! I've been in and out of the vehicle, old house and new townhome for the past two weeks...I'm ready to relax INdoors for a while!

The Pf location of Red's is pretty busy after lunch, especially on Friday. I've never had to wait more than 30 minutes for a lane, however.
