Quality of life. Not quantity of amenities. Radiolibre should chase his $12/hr dreams in Houston.

Austin tops many polls, surveys, studies and rankings - Austin Business Journal

There are too many lists with Austin ranked as a much better place to live than Houston.

If you need a thousand Starbucks and dunkin donuts, Houston is your place. If you need someone to hire you, there are a ton more employers in that concrete swamp land. It's not about being a powerhouse or a player in the urban game. How do you fail to comprehend that the quality of life is better in Austin? I never claimed Austin to have more amenities. This is Texas, yes, but bigger in this case isn't better IMO.

I said Austin had a better quality of life. I said that's its main attraction. That's why I would move there. I was saying that Houston offers more in terms of quantity. It's a major city and its opportunities far outnumber Austin.

Yes that's horrible. Not even in LA is it that bad unless you have a friend in the OC or something.

But that's all outside the loop stuff. I think most Austinites refer to the suburban wormholes they spent their childhood in outside the loop when they complain. It's typical. They grew up in Katy, were in the top of their class, got into UT and then moved to Austin and found it incredible. All without really venturing into Houston. Then they write these asinine opinion pieces about how much Houston sucks in the Texan.

They then move back to Houston after mustering a meager existence in Austin with their Philosophy or Film degree. After some years in Houston and still not making it and hating it because its not Austin do they move back and prefer to live the slacker life there because it doesn't look as bad to trudge it out there.

There I just described the life of three people I know.

Don't lie, Austin is yuppie haven and I've seen it increase exponentially in the short time I've been here.

You've been here a year, I've been here thirty, and you think if I don't share your viewpoint, I am a liar? You throw that word around a lot. That accusation may mean nothing to you - it means everything on earth to me. I will promise you this - you won't say that to my face a second time.

People said, like you, that the Armadillo was what "made Austin interesting.". It's gone - Austin is still Austin. Fast forward twenty years and the closing of Liberty Lunch meant Austin would never be "interesting" again. Austin is still Austin. Personally, I'd say the closing of Virginia's or Crumley's Store or the Pit #3 are just as cataclysmic. Same thing with the demise of the original KOKE-FM. But Austin is still Austin.

You're making the same mistake many short time residents make - that Austin's history started the day they got here. Is Austin different from what it was in 1984, when I finally became a resident after being a frequent visitor since toddlerhood? You don't want me to make that list. It would go on for pages. But the core hasn't changed, because the core is the tolerant live and let live attitude, the love for the outdoors, the appreciation for creativity and quirkiness. No matter how many hipsters arrive, and depart, how many condo towers go up, how many new restaurants come and go - Austin will ALWAYS be interesting.

Yeah, pretty much. The people from "Houston" who all complain, are actually from Katy, Spring, Pearland, Cypress, Dickinson etc. Basically small town Texas. Of course Austin is better in comparison. Well, at least for most.

My friends in Montrose, Heights, Uptown etc... rarely leave town. And if they do, it's on a plane, not to Austin. They have better than Austin right there. But it's not cheap to live in those areas.

By the way, the descriptions of the hills as "gorgeous" are a little funny. My friends from Pittsburgh are not impressed.

I live in The Heights, and I go to Austin every chance I get.

You're the exception to the rule, and I'm pretty sure you've been told this on the Houston board many times.
Just do us all a favor, don't move here and then complain once reality sets in and it's not weekend vaca time.
