Preferably the southern, western, south-western areas of Austin?

Whichever one is closest to the house you like, that's closest to your workplace, that's the best fit for your kids. Tons of good ones - most of them will be interchangeable.

You didn't specify ES, MS or HS.

Does it have to be in the city limits (or are you looking at greater austin)?

You guess?

There are 5-7 good to great HSs that are in the S. SW & W part of the "greater area" in austin. The "best" depends on your kid, what your definition of "best" is & (as EZ said) where your work is.

You can find ranking sites on the web as well, but these are rankings based in whatever the site / newspaper / magazine define as "best" - not necessarily what's best for your kids:

Austin High Schools - Austin, TX | GreatSchools
List of Top 10 area high schools is out | KXAN.com
Austin's Best Schools: Ratings, Reviews, and Grades - Zillow School Information
3 Austin schools rank in the top 100 of America's Best High Schools - CultureMap Austin

Well in that area Bowie, Lake Travis, and of coarse Westlake come to mind. The best? Westlake. Hands down. Anyone trying to tell you different would be wrong- westlake has more money than the other two combined.

That being said a kid who was a successful at Bowie or Lake Travis would be, well, successful at Westlake too. And vise-versa. I really doubt that the difference in education between the three schools are really that different.

Now at the whole Austin area i would include with the best schools Vandegrift, Anderson, and Westwood. These are located in West Austin or Northwest Austin.

Money = the "best"? That's some penny-ante logic right there.

A cruel but very realistic fact in America, though.

No, it's not. The universally regarded "best" school in Austin is not in the richest district (Eanes).

Learning is not about money.
