my wife and I are 36 and want to move. We're considering everything from LA to Baton Rouge to Charlotte and I threw out Austin. I think it'd be fun to be near UT and football and bars and stuff. Would you recommend a move?

You have presented exactly enough information to get an informative and accurate response back. I would definitely listen to what they have to say.

You just missed the cut off. Have to be 35 & under.

Actually, the cutoff is more like 30. We take a "Logan's Run" approach to life here in Central Texas.

On the serious side, that is probably a healthy housing budget, depending on where you want to live (Austin is very spread out), size of the apartment/condo, amenities expected, etc. If you want a thorough answer from some of the very knowledgeable folks here, you'll need to provide more details. If you're still just tossing the idea of Austin around, however, you'll have better luck checking out the many, many threads that exist on the topic.

If you like heat, traffic, and your standard form of entertainment revolves around drinking due to a lack of big city amenities, then Austin is your place.

You probably want to establish more serious criteria.

You didn't say whether kids are involved. If so, being near UT football and bars probably won't benefit them much. If you are kidless and plan to remain so, being in the "core" parts of Austin offers a lot of lifestyle options, but your cost of living (rent or purchase price) is much higher.

Austin, like anyplace, has it's pros and cons. It's a mistake to be drawn by the pros without also taking a serious look at the cons and deciding if the balance works for you.
