I've been a paying subscriber for many years. I've cut back the delivery to the weekends, but just having weekend deliveries allows me to access the online content for free. If I ever decide to quit getting the weekend paper delivered, I'd probably pay for the online subscription. I don't get why people are so up in arms about it. There's still free content out there, but if you want the premium content, you pay. Just like paying for having it delivered to your doorstep before the electronic age. I like the electronic version - it's easy to read on my phone, tablet or desktop.

I think I read that only 5% of subscribers still get the printed version. Makes sense that they'd want to replace the revenue they've lost from home deliveries. BTW, a subscription to the NY Times is $8.75 a week. If you don't like the Statesman content, you have other options.

I'm a 7 day a week subscriber to the Statesman! Just cut back NYT delivery to 6x a week. I read the NYT on line quite a bit, the Statesman on line hardly at all. Although I read newspapers on-line, there is a still a difference for me with the printed paper. I am more likely to read every article in a printed newspaper and I still find value in articles that I stumble upon in print that I would never seek out on-line. For me, this still has value and helps me in my work.

Up in arms?
No.
Curious as to what people think they're getting?
Very
The statesman is one of the worst local rags in the nation. Any of the local news stations has better coverage that the statesman on local issues (admittedly a very very low bar). If I was going to pay anyone for a subscription for local news it would be the Austin Business Journal which actually manages to hire actual journalists and put them on beats. as for national news, if I was going to pay for anything it would be the NYT.

Otherwise, there's plenty of free sources and I'm all too happy to never read another biased hit piece disguised as objective journalism.

No, I won't be paying for it. I rarely read it anyway, these days, although I do get their headlines email and occasionally click on something. Won't be doing that any more. Got lots of other sources for news.

I hope you recognize the incongruity there. If you don't, Vicki Iseman is on line 1.

You're entitled to your opinion. I don't think the Statesman is journalism at it's finest by any means, but "the worst rag in the nation"? Nah. Orlando Sentinel gets my vote for that, LOL. In any case, it's my hometown newspaper, so I'm going to support it. I hold nothing against anyone who wants to get their news elsewhere.
