What about Santa Monica, Culver City, Brentwood, Toluca Lake, Sherman Oaks...? These are all nice areas in LA county. The healthcare... I mean... That's everywhere, right?

Didn't dislike it. Was there for 14 years and have a lot of good friends. Perfectly nice place to live. Lots of good reasons to live there. What I thought was making the city a mess (I'm allowed to give my opinion here, right ) was the "200 people a day moving there", a lot site unseen. No jobs, never been there, heard great things, lets go! The unwarranted hype stil cracks me up........

Again.... this is a board of opinions, right? Good and bad?? You're never on other boards, correct?

People ask about Austin on here, but how many of that 200 (150 was what I heard, but whatever) actually come sight unseen? How many come with no jobs? I know lots of people that have moved here, but every single one came with (or after getting) a job. I am pretty sure almost all of them checked it out. How do you know 'a lot' move here sight-unseen w/o jobs? The fact that employment is not skyrocketing makes me thing otherwise....

The fact that lots of people start asking about moving here before they have a job or before they 'check it out' does not mean that they all suddenly run out the front door and come here.

Nobody ever said your opinion wasn't valid - I just pointed out that you love to jump on every thread and point out the lack of pro sports teams (actually a plus for many people) as a reason Austin shouldn't be so "hyped". The "hype" is driven by jobs, which is the number one people move here and stay here.

Bumping this thread since things are starting to pick up steam. Booked a trip to visit your fine city in mid-May. Really hoping that my little family enjoys the city. We'll be staying downtown but looking to visit the northern and western parts of the city to gauge the neighborhoods/schools.

Really looking forward to eating some good BBQ!

Mid-May is a good time to visit. Nice weather and you will avoid all of the SXSW hoopla.

Thank you very much!

I do have a couple of questions. We're flying in on Friday and leaving Monday at about noon so our time there will be limited. What are some good family outings/day trips that will keep our 6 and 3 yo happy? I've been doing my research on schools in the suburbs and have them listed as: Westwood HS, Cedar Park HS, and Lake Travis HS. Are there any other schools/neighborhoods that I should take into consideration?

Our housing requirements: 4/3, over 2700 sq ft, great school district, not more than 450K, supermarket must be close (<5 miles).

Job location? Or is it a WFH setup?

With a 3YO and 6YO, looking at the HS level is a bit far-sighted, likely restricting your options way too far. However, if that's your criteria:

Anderson
McNeil
Vista Ridge
Leander
Bowie
Vandergrift

Should all be in the mix as well - I'd probably throw Round Rock in there too, since many of the ES/MS that track up through there are great, and RR will likely improve (and isn't too shabby to begin with).

Your list is a good one though I don't think looking ahead to high schools is a bad idea. The problem with some AISD areas is good elementary schools but weak high schools. I would hate to move within Austin because my high school was bad.

I think the OP is a pharmacist - so WFH seems improbable.
