Okay, so I hardly ever go on the toll road. In fact, the last time I put money on my toll tag was 3 or 4 years ago and it just now ran out - literally, my balance went to -$2.00. I haven't paid much attention to the statement balance, just the tolls, which are almost always $0, or else I probably would have put more money on.

Anyway, I go to put money in online, and it tells me my account is suspended and I have to call. Okay, first off, that seems kind of dumb to make you talk to a person when you could just do it online, but fine.

I call the number. Hold time is estimated at 3 minutes, but it is about 18 minutes. Not a big deal, I just put my work phone on speaker and continue to work, all the while listening to the repeated message that "if you have received a notice about a negative balance, go put money in online" (I don't recall the exact wording). Wow, what an idea, but ofc that doesn't work.

Finally talk to someone, pleasant enough fellow. Pay my $2.00 balance via MC, but then he tells me it is $8.50 to reactivate my account. He does apparently look down a list of options that would allow him to waive said fee, but there aren't any. I ask him what is entailed in reactivating my (now up to date) account - he simple hits the 'reactivate' button after receiving the fee or selecting a 'waive fee' option.

So, meanwhile, I am looking online. It is free to open a TxTag account if you choose the 'auto pay' feature (which was not available when I originally joined, I don't think, maybe it was?). In any case, I end up cancelling my TxTag account an re-registering (had to wait a day) for a new account with auto-pay. They are sending me new tags to put in out two cars.

Sooo...they can charge me $8.50 to push a button, or they can send me a whole new welcome pack and tags for free. Ain't Bureaucracy grand?

Btw, this isn't meant to be a rant, it just seems a bit of an odd way to do it......

I suppose they just don't want to have to deal with delinquencies, so the fee is more like a fine designed to prevent it.

I use the toll roads a few times a year and have mine set up for auto pay. I'd probably be more uneasy about that if I lived close to the toll road. Not sure what kind of safeguards are built in if the tag gets stolen.

Had the exact same thing happen to me. Although, in my case, I forgot the CC attached to the account had expired.

It reeks of government process and procedure.

I was charged a toll at a plaza for my vehicle and my trailer. The problem was that they came as two separate fees, one to my tag and the other as an untagged violation fee. When I called they acknowledged the photo clearly showed the tow vehicle and it had a tag (my documentation states trailers are not tagged but are part of the tow vehicle tag), but they could not adjust the fee on the trailer to a tag fee rate. After much discussion they decided they could waive the entire fee, but they could not adjust it to the lower rate.

So they waived 100% instead of letting me pay what I felt I owed.
