Is it the norm for schools to close on Veterans Day in Texas or the exception? Round Rock has school today and does not observe Veterans Day...that is why I was wondering.

I don't recall any Texas schools closing on Veteran's Day, nor Texas Independence Day.

But my schools always had some sort of recognition event.

AISD is closed for teacher in-service - so while the school is closed, it is not a teacher/staff holiday. It is not also explicitly tied to veterans day and I don't think that they align every year....

The kids had an assembly on Friday at our school. 1st grader was singing "its a grand ol' flag" half the weekend .

My kids never had school on Veterans Day in NV
DD is now in Leander ISD, she is miffed she has school
DS is at a private Grad School and has today off which further miffs the teenager who had to go to school.

I found it weird that here, the schools observe Columbus Day and not Veterans Day. We came from an opposite school calendar. It sounds like it varies across the country

Well, you know, when Columbus discovered Texas...

Some districts have school today and some do not. Some districts have the whole week of Thanksgiving off and some don't. I'd rather work on Veteran's Day and have the whole week of Thanksgiving off.

Or be like my son and have today off AND all of Thanksgiving week! (private school).

I didn't even think twice about them having school on Veteran's Day until I saw this post. I think Veteran's Day was an in-service day growing up in Pennsylvania, and I think we had it off in college.

My kids are in LISD. I must admit I was impressed at the Veteran's Day assembly at their school. I took the morning off work to see it and they did a great job. Teaching the kids about the meaning of Veteran's Day and the branches of the military is much better than giving them a day off, and I'll continue to go each year to represent the vets.

Hutto does a great job with Veteran's Day:

HISD Veterans Day Celebration - The Hutto News: News

That was on Friday. There was an air show that went right over the house. They also had the day off on Monday. Nice

It would be even nicer if they had the whole week for Thanksgiving but they do not.
