My house is being constructed now. Roof is done. When I went into attic, I observed that ceiling has tons of nails (40% approx) piercing thru the roof. If I touch my head, then at least 3 will pierce thru my head. I did not observe the same at my friends place constructed by another builder. Both builders are national builders.

It is not safe for sure, but is this the common building method? Is it okay? Any chances of leaking in the future etc?

I'm Very concerned!

I think that is common. I've seen it in replacement roofs, for sure. They warned us about that when we had a roof replaced (not to have anything stacked up really close to the top of the attic, cause the nails would be coming through). I think some roofers use longer nails, which are much more evident inside, but are supposedly better (sturdier roof.)

I am no builder, but as I recall, the nails are less likely to pop back up if they penetrate fully through.
Any liscenced GC's on the board?

Cheers

On the other hand, that means there is just roof decking with no insulation at that point. This would be a good time to add spray foam insulation under the decking in order to minimize the heat gain in the attic. You will probably have insulation of some sort on the attic floor but stopping the heat before it gets in means a cooler attic and longer shingle life in most cases.

even if they used the radiant barrier under the shingles, nails come through that--
I think it is dangerous especially when roofs are so sloped and you don't have that much attic space...

Let the foreman know about what you saw, they will look at it and see if its a problem. That is why they are there.
