Those that have community propane have no choice.

I've been reading these two threads and was at first a bit confused about the term "community propane" but assumed it meant there was a single supply tank for a subdivision that was then piped to various homes there. As opposed to everyone having their own propane tank and being re-supplied by their choice of supplier.

Where I live, I know of no "community system" for propane - but plenty of community water supply systems that are controlled by the HOA in the subdivision. Other home owners in the same area might have their own water wells and be independent of a community system.

The difference is that natural gas rates are controlled by a public utility. And in an area with natural gas, you could choose to use electricity, or propane.

In an area with community propane, you are not allowed to buy your own propane. Your rates are controlled by the unregulated propane supplier. In some of these areas, you can't even use electric appliances.

Very different scenario.

They are actually regulated now- propane is. However, the regulated rates are freaking high, still.

I'm sure some natural gas neighborhoods prohibit propane too.

And nobody has yet posted rates to show that community propane is higher than individual propane.

The "regulation" was price guarantees for the vendors. This was HB 2532 which became effective Sep 1, 2013. The bill provides for a guaranteed minimum markup. In 2013, the minimum markup at the time the bill was filed was $1.48 markup per gallon. In addition to this the bill (now law) provided that a litany of other fees could be charged and set no cap on them. Even worse, all fees in effect as of Jan 1, 2013 were deemed reasonable just because they were already being charged. There is no cap, for example, on the monthly "account fee".

Hmmm... unless I'm reading this wrong, the maximum price per gallon for community propane is only 3% above the market for individual propane.

Doesn't sound like gouging at all.
