Hello,

My previous post about my situation:

//www.city-data.com/forum/austi...ight=yoocanfly

in short, I'm moving to Austin on February 1st, I will visit for house hunting around January 11th. I started looking for apartment rentals on craigslist, but I dont know how fast the apartments go. There's no info on most of craigslist pages about move-in date...

Is it okay to call owners / realtors approx 20 days before move in date? How early do they post ads?

Thanks in advance,

Also, south Austin (like S. Lamar stree / S. Congress area) seems like in my price range (1-2 BR for <1500$), is that a reasonable/good location/ price?

I found a place in NW Austin, but it was hard from far away (Portland, OR). The reason it was so hard is because there aren't many 3br places that were available in my time frame. I have been watching the listings, still, and have not found another in the neighborhood I targeted, so I'm glad I followed my gut and applied when I did. When you see one that is a good fit on paper, and from the pics, swoop it up! It is competitive! I applied for it the day it was listed. I was concerned about a specific high school for my kids though, so maybe I closed a lot of doors. I feel lucky that it all worked out.

Yes it is OK to call 20 days before Move in. Most multi-family places require 2 months notice if you aren't going to renew lease. So that is when they will post information. Smaller private owners could have all kinds of policies.

I don't imagine most places will stay off the market for 20 days. Places are getting scooped up fast. I think it is very risky to sign lease/pay deposit on a place you haven't seen before so I wouldn't recommend that.

So it is OK to call ahead of time, and I think that may help give you a feel for prices and what you can expect here. But unless you are braver than I am I imagine you won't be able to make anything definite until you actually get here.
