I guess my allergy shots and medications are working, as my allergic reactions have been very minor lately. Cedar used to be my worst allergy season. I have been taking shots for so long I'm down to one every 4 weeks now.

I recommend the shots to anyone suffering from Cedar allergies.

I recommend people avoid living in the hill country. Great place to visit about 50% of the time - that time being during off-peak traffic and not during cedar fever season.

My allergies have been far worse this year. This past Sunday, the pollen levels were 18,000 for cedar. My body was telling me that it didn't want to live in Austin that day... If I could just take a vacation to the Caribbean from mid December to mid February, my life would be much easier

I'm wondering how effective increasing your air filtration at home is for retired folk.

I read the best defense against cedar is to stay indoors. But that advice doesn't ever include any info on filtering.

So if you don't stay inside all the time, is increasing your filtering at home worthwhile? Or is using meds like zyrtec/claratin/flonase etc the best you can do to deal with the symptons?

And thanks to CptnRn for his comments.

I do all of the above, but it honestly doesn't help much.

I do too; no real difference.

We are retired, I use the Filtrete 14 in. x 24 in. x 1 in. Ultra Allergen Reduction FPR 9 Air Filter in my HVAC system and have a Hunter HEPA filter next to my side of the bed. I do believe they help.

The allergy shots I have been taking for years have obviously helped me as this has been a really mild cedar season for me, in spite of the record amounts of cedar pollen in the air. I am now down to taking one allergy shot every 4 weeks.

The analogy that makes sense to me as a life long sufferer of allergies is the "rain barrel" -- various pollens, stresses, genetic weaknesses, nutritional problems etc will all add to filling the barrel and you never know which one is going to make it overflow. So it's good to hit from as many angles as possible. Of the various things I've tried I think one that really helped is mega dosing on vitamin D3 (5000 units/day). After 3 years my blood test is still not too high. If you do this take extra magnesium as your body will use more. Google "seasonal allergies" and "vitamin D3" with the quotes for info. As far as air purifiers for the bedroom etc this is a great place to research Top Air Purifiers: (10) air-purifier-power.com I'm still suffering although better. Next step for me is getting the allergy drops (SLIT). Will see.
