Moving to a new place that backs up to slaughter creek behind Mary Moore Searight park and was wondering if that part of the creek ever runs dry. Does anyone know if it is stays as deep and beautiful all the time? Any long term experience would help. Thanks!!

It is dry more often than it is wet. It was dry for over a year until the last weekend of October.

This site... Austin Top 50 Fun in the Sun: July 2013. Sure made it seem as though it was plenty wet during the heat of the summer well before the October rains came.... Thoughts?

My mistake. I was thinking of the Slaughter Creek Preserve. My apologies.

I live in the Knolls of Slaughter Creek, and the creek runs through the greenbelt right behind my house. MSM Park is on the other side of the creek from us.

I would say that it is usually flowing pretty well. There are parts that are deeper than others, and during the periods of extreme droughts, I can walk across it into the park at the parts of it that have high rocks on the bottom. But for the most part, it's usually flowing really strongly. After a nice, hard rain, you can hear it just gushing through - almost sounds like a small engine is running back there. I've even seen people in canoes and small row boats out fishing in it. I go down and walk along it every couple of weeks and really enjoy that it's there.

It's dammed off like Lady Bird Lake. Why would it be dry?

If you live close to the creek you should be sure to familiarize yourself with the flood plain in the area. Most of Austin's creeks do flood in some locations.

Ummmmm, maybe because it doesn't have lake Travis and lake Austin upstream providing headwaters?
