Does anyone know why a loud low flying airplane would be circling southwest Austin neighborhoods in the early hours of the morning? It sounds like a plane, not a helicopter. Last night it circled for at least an hour, keeping my husband and I up until it finally went away. We figured it was police looking for someone. However, it's back right now (currently 1:25am) and I'm concerned this is something else and that it will continue reoccurring and waking us up.
Surely we aren't the only ones bothered by this?

When you say "low", just how low do you mean? Police aren't generally going to be looking for someone using an airplane, especially in a city. They use helicopters for that. It could just be someone practicing night flying, etc. I don't know all the restrictions/requirements because my husband is the law enforcement pilot, not me, and he's not with me right now. Then again...it could just be someone wanting to fly his plane at night. Who knows.

If it happens again and you live in the CoA, call 311 and ask. If it is APD, they will tell you. And APD only has helicopters, not planes. If it was low enough to bother you, it was almost certainly a helicopter.

there are Air Forces bases in SA that might be doing training runs at night that might come this far north but military aircraft have a distinctive sound.

Odd, I'm in Legend Oaks and did not hear anything. What part of SW Austin?

I'm near Brodie and Convict Hill. Two nights ago, the plane (or helicopter?) circled for at least an hour around 2:30am. Last night it circled for less than 30 min (from the time it woke me up) around 1am. Then I could hear it further away in the distance for another 30-45 min after that.

If it was military training it will stay a secret.

I'm south of Ft Hood and out in rural country and see some pretty nifty stuff flying overhead usually north into Ft Hood.
