I am moving to Austin in February, 2014 for employment. I ma visually impaired and do not drive so I will be using public transportation. I do not wish to live in central Austin and wold prefer a suburb and commute. Does anyone have any recommendations on suburbs that Central Metro services?

Where in Austin is your job located?

Budget?

Desired community type/amenities?

Cap Metro does not service cities outside of Austin, heck, it barely services the city of Austin. Knowing where you need to commute to, and what your budget is, will help us give you some ideas of suburban "ish" neighborhoods that will be serviced by public transportation.

Capital Metro's not a bad service. I used it extensively when I was a student at UT. I know that the 383 comes from the North Lamar Transit Center and goes in suburban Anderson Mill to Lakeline Mall. A friend of mine lives near Kathy Caraway Elementary (around Barrington Rd) and takes some sort of express bus to downtown. I used to take the #1 all the time when I was a student at UT; that and the #15 (I think, the Red River.) Don't listen to the nay-sayers, the bus system does exist and for a city of this size it's pretty good. Oh, and my husband bike commutes most days but sometime takes the Metro Rail and doesn't like it but it does exist! Good luck!

Generally we recommend that you determine where you will be working, then ask for recommendations on housing near that area.

The Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired website probably has some resources that may be useful to you. Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI)

The transit system is called Capital Metro and its website is located here: Capital Metro - Austin Public Transit
