If you find southern California beaches not so great, you're going to be sorely disappointed with those in Texas. I think the closest good beach is Gulf Shores, Alabama --- but even that will be a very different experience for someone used to ocean beaches.

Take I10 west and until you hit the western panhandle of Florida. This is the closest nice beach with beautiful white sand and clear water.......Notta in TX, no comparison.

Destin, FL is very nice.

"Secret Beach" at Gus at Roy G
Guerrero Park in East Austin off Riverside Dr. Watch out for the cops though, due to the East Side Tubes brouhaha, city council shut down the beach with no discussion! It's so mellow though, very eclectic crowd.

If you've got kids there is a nice, shallow beach park on the bay in Rockport.

Waters here rival places like cancun. Water is beautiful, clear, and with white soft sand. A 4 day weekend should be enough to make the drive and enjoy it a few days. There are no waves like the west coast but it's amazing. It almost felt like I was in a water park.
Isn't this is Alabama?

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are in Alabama, Destin Florida is just a little further East, all part of the same chain of Gulf Coast islands.

Anyone have experience buying a house on the beach to use as a rental/vacation house? It is something that we have toyed with.

Mustang Island Park in Corpus isn't too bad. About a 4 hour drive South from Austin. I went there last March for the day.
