Hi all..I have been reading quite a bit about Austin in these forums. People seem really polarized about the city.. some love it, some seem to just hate it and want to leave. Some of it appears to be the housing market, the competition for homes, jobs, etc.. But other things I have read talks about the attitude of the town.. So it got me thinking, the towns outside of Austin, for example, New Braunfels.. are these more laid back kind of places, a bit slower pace, and friendly people.. or it is a bedroom community of people commuting to Austin? Just curious.. I know nothing about either place except what I read on these forums.. so trying to get a perspective from people who know.

More common to commute to SA from New Braunfels than to Austin.

As scm53 said, New Braunfels is more connected to San Antonio than to Austin, as it is so much closer to that city. San Marcos would be the equivalent for Austin.

New Braunfels isn't "a town outside Austin". It's it's own town in it's own right - and totally different.

New Braunfels is a nice city, but vastly different from Austin. I agree it is more natural to link it to San Antonio. New Braunfels history is tied to German immigrants. And that is still visible in New Braunfels proper. The vibe in NB is much different. Older, calmer, not hip.

Approx distances between city centers via IH-35:

Austin/San Antonio - 80
Austin/New Braunfels - 50
Austin/San Marcos - 30
