I hate seeing "Old Austin" gradually disappear. Laid back, non-pretentious, reasonable prices, etc.

Well hey, you can now buy $8 beer at the UT baseball stadium and the Erwin Center.

Club De Ville. My favorite bar in Austin. Maybe Speakeasy.

Crown and Anchor a good suggestion too.

I find that just about anything on S Lamar is "just right" as far as the laid back bar scene (I include Austin Beer Garden in that area). Parking is good. It's not as fake hipster as SoCo, nor as intense hipster as East Austin. It isn't overly upscale or overly student/partier dominated like the downtown bar districts. S Lamar is more like the Austin of the past if it had been allowed to grow naturally (instead of with city interference or rapid gentrification). If I can walk into the bar and see at least 2 Live Oak selections on tap, I know I'm in the right place for a friendly, laid-back Austin vibe.

Specific bars, many good ones previously mentioned. I second the Dog and Duck recommendation.

When I'm talking S Lamar, I mean I enjoy having a drink anywhere there. Broken Spoke, Black Sheep Lodge, Gourdough's, Baker Street, Reds, even places like Rockin' Tomato and Kerby Lane have a little bar scene. Pluckers is always packed, and it isn't for the chicken. There are tons more, really too many to list. And that is just one stretch of one street -- and not even one of the famous Austin bar streets.

Your favorite bar went out of business. A super special bar has taken it's place.
