I have a Texas Tag. I've only ever needed to use it once, when I went to visit a friend in Houston. I got it to make traveling around the toll roads easier even if I seldom use them.

Anyway, my bill that included December showed up in Feburary with a charge for 51 cents for a toll plaza in Austin on Christmas Eve. It was listed as "pay by plate" which wouldn't make sense even if I had been in Austin that day, because I have a tag.

So, I was nowhere near Austin (I live in San Antonio and was having eye surgery that day - yup, on Christmas Eve) yet I got charged 51 cents because some car which apparently has a plate similar to mine was misread.

I have contacted the TX Tag folks three times already. The first time by phone, the second two by sending a message through the website. The charge remains on my account Their website states I'll receive a response within 24 hours, yet I never got a response at all to my written disputes.

I know it's only 51 cents, but IT WAS NOT MY CAR. I am steaming mad over this. Who's going to stop them from sending out bills to every driver in Texas, tag or no tag? A few hundred thousand erroneous charges could add up to a nice little income for the toll road folks.

Any suggestions of what to try next? Another phone call? A personal visit to their office?

I have a co-worker who was charged all these fees to her for tolls, and was expected to pay about $700 in fines and such - since at first she thought it was because she had bought a used car from someone and they were mailing the bills to the former owner rather than her and she wasn't getting them - so they were charging her late fees, fines, etc.

When she went to to the TX tag office, it turned out a lot those charges were for a different car altogether - and not hers! So she paid only $34 for her share, and TX-Dot had to eat the rest - unless they get those bills straightened out.

I'm glad I hardly (if ever) use any of of the toll roads and avoid them as much as I can.
