Considering relocating from the NYC Metro area to Austin (for rent, job market)

I am considering relocating from the NYC area (Queens) to Austin. I am 29, male, single.

I have enough money saved and can afford to pay about $1,000 a month for rent.. Ideally I would like to live downtown / central.

How is the job market?? I work in financial accounting (mutual fund accounting) but likely may not have a job lined up when I move early next year. Without going off topic, I may be laid off from my current position in NYC by the end of the year. But like I said above, I will have about 6 month - 1 year of living expenses saved (assuming you can live on $3,000 a month in Austin).

I guess I am looking for advice from others who made the move from the NE or NYC area to Austin.. Are you happy?? Do you regret doing this?? I know about the heat and having to drive everywhere so you don't need to mention that.
