Hello! My name is Kristin

We are a young healthy empty nester 50 yr old couple. We are Colorado people living in Florida. Uggh! Nothing against Fl. but it's a different world over here in every way. We have decided to sell our business and make a change. As much as we love Co. we thought we would look into some other options like Austin. We are big live music fans (more blues than anything but we like it all) as well as good food and the beautiful outdoors. We also definately enjoy some privacy and a little space regarding our home. We are coming to visit in 3 weeks and were thinking of renting a place off VRBO. to check out Austin and the surrounding towns and areas.

If anyone can suggest an area to rent for a week that would suit us best to get an idea of living in or close to Austin which would give us easy access to checking out different areas, we would appreicate your imput.

As well, if anyone can suggest any small surrounding towns to visit as an option to live that might still offer some of the things stated above yet not in the thick of the Austin traffic and big city feeling, that would be great. Ideally, we would love to find an area that has somewhat of a small town feel filled with different people and ages that thrives on music, art and the outdoors. Depending on whether we sell both our house and condo here in Fl. will dictate what we will buy in Austin when it is time. But the range would be $275.00-$550.00...depending

Thank you for your time and thoughts
Kristin and Scott

Did you mean to say that your budget for purchasing a home is between 275K and 550K?

Take a look at Fredericksburg.

You'll have to decide if you want to live in the thick of it in a smaller central house or condo, or live outside Austin where you get more house for your money and more breathing room. I would default/start "central" and rent a short term rental south of downtown in the 78704 zipcode. That will provide a home base from which you can venture and explore.

I'll let others comments on small nearby suburbs/towns, but, frankly, there are drawbacks to any choice you make and it usually involves a trade off between lifestyle, convenience and price.

Finally, the things that are fun on a visit are not necessarily the things locals do or that you would do daily if you lived here. Don't fall into that trap. Try to have an itinerary that exposes you to more daily life stuff than tourist/visitor stuff.

Steve

To further expand on austin-steve's suggestion, I'd see if I could find a short term rental specifically in the west part of 78704 -- Like S. Lamar area or just west of that. It's more locals and less touristy. If you are comfortable driving everywhere, maybe something farther west in the hilly areas -- west of Mopac and around 360.

You'll find that the best areas are quite pricey when it comes to buying, though. It might take the upper end of your price range to get something single-family in these areas.
