Hello all,

I hope this thread catches you smiling. Though I have never been to Austin, I am looking to a road trip into the area some time this October from Milwaukee. Since I only have a few days, I was wondering if you could offer suggestions on places to check out that bring the community together and give a good sense of the city.My thought would be places that are reminiscent of Cheers, a bar/hang out where people know each other by name and whose management values bringing people together.

Also, I see Elephant Room and Continental Club are regular choices of music venues. Since Austin is a known music town, any other choices that you can think of would be great.

Thanks for your time,

Bridget (lilsidge)

I think you are looking for places a little "divier" - to make up a word. Some of my faves:

Deep Eddy Cabaret (no, there is no music)

Mug Shots (Amazing jukebox, cheap drinks)

Horseshoe Lounge (Schlitz by the bottle in the same center as one of the best new restaurants in America)

Little Longhorn Saloon (home of the never duplicated chicken $hit bingo)

Kellee's Place (added benefit of adjoining one of the best barbeque places in town).

Salud!

If you want to see regulars at bars, don't go on the weekends. Go during the week on their "pint night" or whatever special day they have. A few of examples:

Dog and Duck Pub (I think pint night is Tues)

Rockin' Tomato, the ORIGINAL @ 3003 S.Lamar 78704 (Pizza place, with a small bar. Go on Tues, board game night)

Opal Devine's (Tuesday pint night)

etc..

All good suggestions thus far with different vibes. Blackstar Coop is another place, great concept.

Thanks so much to you all. I really am excited to check out some of these places. I will be there during the week (more than likely). It seems that Tuesday will be the night to beat. Axtcio, would people be open to having a stranger join their game at the Rockin' Tomato?

Being from Milwaukee the Blackstar Coop, ABGB and Draught House will be interesting to try for the craft beers and the people. However the addition of the music at the Little Longhorn Saloon, Donn's, Saxon and the juke box action at Kelle's, Mug Shots and Buddy's should make the trip. BBQ will also be a must.

If you any of you are planning to visit Milwaukee, please let me know so I can return the favor. I have a feeling our music scene wouldn't be able to compare but we could give a good run on the hangout/craft beers.
