The water itself can exhibit remarkable clarity at times when the offshore weather sensors show swell heights in the gulf of 2 feet or less for at least 2 days in a row. It's not uncommon at all for me to see my feet while standing in 3 feet of water. The seaweed will still be there, though. Port Aransas is not exempt, although they seem to do a great job of keeping the seaweed from accumulating on the beach itself.
We were there visiting last May for a week and there was some seaweed that washed up on several days (a long line down the beach about 6 feet across but not too deep). BUT they cleared it with a plow all but one day which was great. It wasn't much of an issue overall.

Seaweed never really bothered me that much so maybe it was there but it never hampered any fun that was to be had.

Lot's of good links on that site. Any discussion of the gulf should include what has happened and what will continue to happen with oil. My opinion, and yes, everyone has one.

We found the fastest beach to get to is the one south of Houston. You just stay on the outer loop and don't go thru Houston, that way you avoid the traffic. It is called Surfside and it is nice.

I personally find Padre way nicer than any closer beaches but when I don't want to drive, Mustang, Surfside all those will do fine.

OOO forgot about the oil-dang...

We've been thinking about visiting Surfside as Port A has gotten too crowded and too rowdy for us old farts. Are there nice places to stay there? We have friends that go every summer for 2 weeks and rent a house, but that's probably too much for the two of us.
