Anyone have suggestions for a decent hotel to stay at? I'm heading down the end of June for 4 days/3 nights. I'm stuck between getting a hotel close to downtown and taking a taxi plus free airport shuttle, or staying at a downtown one for a little more and no shuttle service to the airport on my way back. I've never been in a taxi up here so I guess I'm a little wary on the actual expenses.

Plenty of high end hotels in downtown Austin! What is your budget? Four Seasons, Radisson, Hyatt, Hilton, Driskill, Omni, the list goes on. But you will spend around $200 a night. There is a Best Western Plus just south of downtown for about $120.

Taxi to the airport from downtown is about $25.

The 100-Airport Flyer bus takes you from the airport to downtown for $1.50. It all depends on your price range for places you want to stay as centralaustinite mentioned above

I've stayed at the Residence Inn downtown the last few times I've visited Austin. The prices do seem to fluctuate a lot depending on whether there's a big event going on, but that's true for all the places. I stayed at the Hyatt before, but being across the lake, it's not as convenient for walking to DT. The bar at the Driskill is fun, but its right on 6th Street with all the rowdiness there ... so that depends on your tastes. The Hilton strikes me as a bit antiseptic. If I were to try some place new, I would choose the Four Seasons, but I'm guessing that would be the most pricey, too.

Also, the Omni has been recommended to me along with the Driskill. Just one person's opinion. OTOH, if you want to spend less money, don't stay downtown.

use the priceline bidding process to get a hotel. If you search the forum for priceline Ive explained it before. As long as there is no big event, you can get one of the top hotels downtown for 80-150/night

Taxis from the airport shouldnt be too expensive. Maybe $25? Its been awhile so I dont remember exactly.

I would definitely stay downtown.
