maybe gulfport MS. Use googles satellite view to see which gulf coast areas actually have a beach, then do the image search to see pictures of the water. It is the mississippi and colorado rivers that make our water muddy so I think water east of those are fine.

supposedly the barrier islands off biloxi are clear.

Gulf Shores IS incredible.

Clean, white sand beaches. Laid back atmosphere. Plenty of stuff to do if you need time away from the beach.

Makes me wish I still lived closer than 12-14 hours...

The beaches at Cancun and the little island of Isla Mujeres are really nice, 2hour 20 minute flight from Austin. The snorkling at Park Garafon on Isla Mujeres is amazing. You can ride a ferry boat over for a day trip from Cancun.

The MS Gulf Coast is brown, but take the ferry out to Ship Island and the water is as clear as can be. That's a few hours closer than Destin and you could even stay in Biloxi at the casinos or would be a quick day trip from a New Orleans based stay (party in the FQ at night, visit Ship Island in the day).

We LOVE Ship Island! It's a fabulous day trip. When we go to that area we take the ferry out there two or three days in a row. The purity and isolation beats busy boardwalk beaches any day.

I hope I didn't let the cat out of the bag, because it's so nice and usually not too crowded. I'm so glad there is no development there...
