Since austin is an international airport, where do you do all the passport and check in stuff? We have 45 minutes for our connection in dallas how much checking will there be in dallas? Will there be extra security screening in dallas?

Check in completely in Austin. If your flight is on time, 45 minutes is plenty of time in Dallas. You can catch the sky link to switch terminals. You only need to show your boarding pass and passport to board the flight to Cancun, assuming you don't exit the terminal and have to re-enter through security for some odd reason.

On your return you will go through customs and immigration in Dallas, so your layover is probably longer.

Doesn't Southwest (via its recent acquisition of AirTran) fly direct/non-stop to CUN from AUS?

there were no flights available for the days we are going.

I was mainly concerned about whether it is a normal connection in dallas or if we have to go through any extra security which could slow us down.

Thsi sounds about right. When I was traveling on business to Mexico, they checked our passport at the gate in Dallas, but otherwise there was nothing special.

The return home is a different story - you retrieve your luggage and go through Customs in Dallas and it's a fair walk to the next terminal IIRC. You'll need more than 45 minutes.

Depending on where you are sitting it can take over twenty minutes to get off a plane so now you're down to 25 minutes. The doors close ten minutes prior so now you have 15. Flights are considered on time if they arrive under 15 minutes scheduled arrival so that can leave you what, 0-1 minute to get to the next gate? I would never book a 45 minute connection unless it was connecting to a destination that had hourly flights.

Believe me, AA is more interested than you are in ensuring your documents are in order before you leave AUS. They will thoroughly check them, then annotate your electronic record to ensure there is no reason you don't get on the plane from DFW - CUN.

It will go fine.
