The denial stage may last a very long time.

Well, when the Chief of Police calls for more severe penalties for drunk drivers while at the same time quietly reinstates fired officers guilty of DWI and doesn't call for the Vodka-soused DA to resign, then I will withhold commenting about him until his position is clarified.

Levine's approach makes a lot of sense.

That's all well & good for the rich white hipsters who can afford to live in central Austin, but kind of leaves out the underclass of... workers.... who cannot.

It's the lack of density that causes people to be priced out of central Austin. Keeping the existing amount of housing stock (via code and preservation ordinances) while the demand increases (Austin population doubling in twenty years) can't help but lead to greatly increased prices.

Think globally, drink locally!

I never really think about these things but does the APD get to automatically seize (forever) the vehicle after a DWI has been established?

1) There are literally zero overnight parking options in DT Austin. By 2am, the tow trucks are lined up and ready to get to work. So, that's one major problem.

2) Another problem is the complete lack to taxis at closing time. If you call, they will not come unless you have a residential address—they will literally laugh at you if you say, "I'm at the intersection of ..." Other than that, it's every man for himself. It once took me over an hour to find a taxi to take an inebriated friend home.

3) No late-night public transportation options.

If Austin wants to address drinking and driving in a meaningful way, they will do something about these three issues.

Also every time any form of entertainment district starts to sprout in another area of Austin (Burnet for example) the local neighborhood associations organize opposition and pressure for denial of all liquor licensing.

.
Has DUI gone up since the parking hours downtown were expanded?
