We were responding to HCH's desire to have "somewhere to have a pint and a meal and have a chinwag. Unless you live near a small town coffeeshop, there's no equivalent in Texas" I disagree with that. We have plenty of places that meet that definition.

But you haven't my addressed my point that even leaving zoning aside (but it is a high and costly hurdle) operating "fully licensed adult bars" in a neighborhood (or anywhere else) faces greater scrutiny from TABC and that is why most folks open restaurants that serve alcohol! It is easier to do and the risk is less.

I live central I DO happen to live a very short walk from a "fully licensed adult bar" It isn't a place for locals though. About 1-2x a year we wake up to vomit in the street and we have had drunks on our porch. One left behind his shoe. It certainly isn't an amenity for the neighborhood. And it probably hurts my property values in comparison to homes father away.

But whatever, it is a minor hassle in the broad scheme of things. There just isn't demand for local bars and it is too hard for bar owners to make $ doing it.

What do you mean by this?

It is a bar in a mid-priced hotel that is not attractive to locals (not the W in other words) and only serves travelers.

The only benefit is that the drunks are not regular and are just passing through, so the puking in the street isn't regular and it is never the same drunk dude on the porch twice!

No one in the neighborhood drinks there. Local go to a handful of pubs/venues/restaurants that serve food, welcome kids, have live music, and do not rely 100% on alcohol sales. I can walk to one that meets that description and bike to dozens of others. That's where I see my neighbors.

Most regular bar patrons probably travel far enough from their home that they don't have to display their 'non-sober' side to their neighbors :P.

Yes, there are a few non-alcoholics, but they spend so little in the bar that they are inconsequential.
Why not go all the way and bring back prohibition? It worked so well the first time.

On another note, it's amazing how many "free market" dogmatists won't even bat an eye at the government stepping in to tell business owners what they can and cannot do with their properties.

So you are opposed to zoning? Impervious cover limits? Minimum wage? Bag bans? Sure don't sound like anything "free market dogmatists" are beating the drums for.

I have no problem with alcohol at all, just saying that I sure don't miss any potential 'neighborhood bar'. I have no issue with strippers, but don't want a strip club down the street. Same for porn shops.

I also find it somewhat amusing that 'more bars closer to homes' is proposed solution to DUI.....

I've heard that argument many times in these kinds of discussions. It seems to always make an appearance. It's as old as calling someone "hitler" every time they make a suggestion to change things with a law, rule or societal norm. It seems to end more discussions than continue them.

Seriously, anyone with google maps can take a walk to Austin and see they really need more bars.

Don't mind me...I'm crabby because of allergies....mold...ugh!

What's your beef with kids in bars?
I spent a good chunk of my childhood in pubs.
