Am looking to rent or swap for minimum 1 month in November an area we can live in without a car to see if we like living in Austin. For my husband and I. What zip codes areas would you suggest?
How is Rosewood? Other than craigslist any other resources to find a place? Thanks for any help. Minimum 1 bedroom.

Rosewood or Rosedale? Some people get the two confused. I can't help with Rosewood , but Rosedale would be ideal, if you can find a short term rental within your budget. It's a sought after area. Short walk through tree lined streets to most anything you want. Shopping, groceries, pharmacy, restaurants, coffee shops, a pub, salons, doctors, dentists and other professional services, a park, neighborhood pool, etc. Truly a step back in time. My office was in Rosedale for several years. I loved being there. Zip is 78756.

as opposed to an efficiency or studio
(no separate bedroom)

guess you've never had to live in one of them

Rosewood is one of the roughest areas of Austin (by Austin standards.) I would not recommend it to people from out of town who are not familiar with the area --- particularly those who would be dependent on walking/biking/public transportation.

Rosewood is fine as long as you're not walking alone after dark.

1-3 months?
that's a sublet, and craigslist is your best bet for that.
use the map view, but take note that some of the listings are inaccurately placed on the map.

Having lived in Austin several years without a car, you really need to know where you will be working first. If you look at Cap Metro's system map, it looks like the routes were scribbled out by a 2 y.o.

I would recommend checking out the Domain. It is within the Cars2go service area, the Kramer train station is nearby, and the 392 bus route works pretty well for getting you to grocery stores, the post office, etc.

You most likely will want to avoid any area that is serviced by 1 or 2 digit bus routes because they were dreadfully slow years ago, and I doubt that has improved. Also, if the public transportation route requires transfers, it is not go to be reliable. Being willing to walk up to a mile or even better, bike ride several miles will greatly expand you options, but it is pretty miserable from July - September and a pain in the neck year round if you are hauling groceries.
