Hello out there!

How is everyone doing? I am sure you are just thrilled reading another post about someone wanting to move to Austin but in all sincerity I do appreciate those that respond and give me some honest feedback.

Currently I am living in the Washington DC area and have for most of my life. My current GF/Future wife use to live in San Antonio and a few other places in Texas. IF we decide to move to Texas to start the next chapter in our life, we would have a good amount of her family there-brothers in San Antonio and Mom/Dad are between Austin and San Antonio.

Reasons to Why I want to move to the Austin Area:
1. People-ive visited Texas about 10 times now and the people always surprise me. I am just not use to the southern hospitality, the kindness, the-hey I actually want to talk to you mindset.
2. Food-I love food and there are mostly chains here in the DC area. Texas has some good food.
3. Cost of living-I used the cost of living calculator and its 68% less to live in San Antonio than DC.
4. Land-Its hard to find housing here without spending 1mil plus for some land.
5. Weather-NOT a fan of the cold weather nor snow
6. Traffic-Ive been in the austin traffic and it isnt ANYTHING close to DC traffic.

Budget: $350k and below

What we are looking for:
1. 1/4 to a 1.2+ of an acre for land
2. Good schools. Her background is in teaching so IF anything she could home school. SO this isnt a PRIORITY but its a cherry on top.
3. Either an old house we could remodel and make it our own OR a place thats already been updated/is new. I keep finding houses for 300k+ but they would need an entire regut, especially the kitchens.
4. A community that is close to shopping, entertainment. I dont necessarily want to be out in the middle of no where.
5. a diverse neighborhood with some young families
6. I am not 100% stuck on moving exactly into Austin but why not?

Ive been looking at Round Rock but she is stuck on wanting to move to Austin.

What are some good zip codes, neighborhood to check out? I have been using zillow for my housing search but it seems like austin is all over the place when it comes to neighborhoods

Thanks for your help.

That price range is not going to get you what you're looking for in Austin. Those days are gone. San Antonio would be a great option.

You might find it in some of the communities surrounding Austin, but Austin proper is going to be a challenge at that price. Though I've done it for some folks!

You can find a house in SW Austin (78749, 78735, 78736), or NW Austin (78729, 78750) with good schools in that price range. Or you can find a house in NE Austin in University Hills or Windsor Park but the schools will be terrible (78723). Far South Austin (78748) has prices you can afford but the schools are just ok.

You won't struggle to find a house in Austin for under 350k, but you wont find one in a hot Central Austin neighborhood in that range. That being said, you will get much more for your dollar in San Antonio.

You know, I may have been too quick.

Check out MLS listing:

1324818

1907610

Those are the two in Austin that fit. You'll probably have to make an offer this weekend though.

@Roadwarrior12-what website are you using to search? I have always used Zillow but MLS 1324818 doesnt show up on their site-states that the address isnt for sale BUT when I search the MLS number it comes up as a nice house And Thank you!

Zillow sucks. Use Austin real estate | Homes for Sale Austin | Austin Homes | Austin real estate | Homes for Sale Austin | Austin Homes that's the actual Austin MLS.

No on the 78750 at that price range AND good schools (elem thru high school). And I double-checked looking at Active listings. (The dividing line is Anderson Mill Rd.)

78729 will get you the price range but "good schools" is arguable and the lot size requirement won't be met.
