I got a huge decrease in my premiums last year by saying good bye to State Farm and going with an independent insurance agent, Phyllis Benjamin, Benjamin-Fry Insurance, (512) 212-7185, HOME - BenjaminFryInsurance

Safeco ended up being the company I got best rates for when I moved my auto, home and rental property insurance all ot Safeco policies.

I would agree, go with an agent that compares a ton of different companies.

That is what we did, and we saved big.

We ended up with Geico for auto, and one of geico's partner companies for home.

Don't be afraid to call up every few years and have them run another quote. If your agent is worth it, he will do this before you ask him to every few years.

Germania. They're a Texas-only insurer, you're not a customer, you're a member (there's even a credit union available), their rates are great, and our experience with their response (and failure to raise rates) when we had a claim is great.

Texas Farm Bureau is what I have for mine - car & house combined. I pay about $600/yr for my house, and $57/mo for the car.

If there is an immediate family member with USAA eligibility, they are the highest rated for both homeowners and auto coverage. I have it because my ex-father-in-law was retired military, and since I married his daughter - even though we later divorced - I am still under their coverage.

I too received a large bump in my homeowners this year, but after a phone call and re-assessment of my situation, I managed to get the next year's premium lowered to less than last years, but of course I will have less coverage. It's the annual bump-up in estimated costs to rebuild that was causing my rate to go up.
